The naturalism is appeared in last decade of the 19th century. It is Philosopically oriented movoment. It was combined by America. But we should bear in mind that Naturalits had large part inspration and theory got from the Europe. There were scientefic, discoveries and technological development in 19th century. The direction idea of the Naturalism is man is belong the nature. It is more sientific form. Man is alone only there is man and nature there is no god or god not with you. There is no divinity, no fate. There must be natural selection. The man genetic is out of the control only nature control it. Man is on the survive by nature. Man is animal also we can say that man is on the wild life and man choceis are based on nature.
Sister Carrie and Jack London are the best examples of the Naturalism that can be read and analayz. Determination, survival, violence, brave, conflict, Man & Nature Human life, Human nature can be observed themes in Naturalism. Man is at the whim and out of the control and there is no governtment. Man is simply an animal. Naturalism refers to low class, working class, not upper class. There are problematic events in the Naturalism. There must be violence in topics. The nature’s laws Govern the universe. There is opposite connection between naturalism and idealism. “natural self” are associated with nature. The Naturalists do not believe in Spiritualism. According to Naturalism material World is only fact for them. We keep bear in our mind that Naturalism characters, don’t have a good education and not well-educated person. They generally live with poor conditions and events, and do not have money just for basic needs, we can always observe the conflict on Naturalism characters as man against the nature or himself. There is a most important Naturalist Writer who name is Theodore Dreiser. His most important Work Sister Carrie can be read under the Naturalism Works. He is journalist naturalist and novelist. Such as; guilty of sexuality and adulty topics can be seen on his Works as characters. In his process he wrote a works which was censored. We can understand his writes that affected by environment. Theodore is self-educated writer. He is Uniq. Some of books that he wrote were censored. There is not just Cristianity both religions are noticed from his books which he used. Every Character has American dream and choices in his writes. There is a line that connection with Naturalism and Novel; “Half the undoing of the unsophisticated and natural mind is accomplished by forces wholly superhuman.” It means that gives us the idea of it. There are forces and we can not beyond. Our fee-will has limitations.
If we talk about the most important naturalist work which name is Sister Carrie, we should say that it has setting in 1889. The important character is Carrie. I want to start with these lines from novel; “When Caroline Meeber boarded the afternoon train for Chicago, her total outfit consisted of a small trunk, a cheap imitation alligator-skin satchel, a small lunch in a paper box, and a yellow leather snap purse, containing her ticket, a scrap of paper with her sister's address in Van Buren Street, and four dollars in money “. She makes first choice to move to Chicago to earn different life and wanted to have well conditions. She is at her 18 and leaving home Colombia her poor life. During her choice She met a man who name is Charles, in train station. “He came within the meaning of a still newer term, which had sprung into general use among Americans in 1880, and which concisely expressed the thought of one whose dress or manners are calculated to elicit the admiration of susceptible young women—a "masher." His suit was of a striped and crossed pattern of brown wool, new at that time, but since become familiar as a business suit.” Charlie is well dressed and Flashy and high class. “He took out his pencil and a little pocket note-book.” From this line, we understand; For Carrie, Charlie is dream boy and ideal man to face eveythings that Carrie wanted. After Charlie, Carrie is done, but she is uneducated. “Her own plain blue dress, with its black cotton tape trimmings, now seemed to her shabby. She felt the worn state of her shoes.“Around him, her clothes unstylish and bad. We can understand uneducated type from this line of Novel; “Books were beyond her interest—knowledge a sealed book.” From these lines; we come a cross with her background of sister house and life. “Minnie's flat, as the one-floor resident apartments were then being called, was in a part of West Van Buren Street inhabited by families of labourers and clerks, men who had come, and were still coming, with the rush of population pouring in at the rate of 50,000 a year. It was on the third floor, the front windows looking down into the street, where, at night, the lights of grocery stores were shining and children were playing. To Carrie, the sound of the little bells upon the horse-cars, as they tinkled in and out of hearing, was as pleasing as it was novel. She gazed into the lighted street when Minnie brought her into the front room, and wondered at the sounds, the movement, the murmur of the vast city which stretched for miles and miles in every direction.” She moved to her Sister building which is poor and bad. She finds the building small. Her Sister name is Minnie and her husband is Hunson. “Minnie's manner was one of trained industry, and Carrie could see that it was a steady round of toil with her.” We can understand Minnie’s character from this line. “and could probably get work and pay her board here. She was pleased to see her in a way, but reflected her husband's point of view in the matter of work. Anything was good enough so long as it paid—say, five dollars a week to begin with. A shop girl was the destiny prefigured for the newcomer.” From these lines; They are not rich family. She was expected to work by her sister and sister’s husband for earning Money and contribute to family. Because of there were no any comfort zone to live that house. Hunson’s charachter is typically low working class. People in working class, do not enjoy their life process, they just want to earn Money. So just this reason why, this family had no even activities or anything to do in their life. “It was a city of over 500,000, with the ambition, the daring, the activity of a metropolis of a million. Its streets and houses were already scattered over an area of seventy-five square miles. Its population was not so much thriving upon established commerce as upon the industries which prepared for the arrival of others.” From my opinion, Carrie could not find the desire, fancy, and dream life that she wanted from the Chicago on her sister’s life. From these lines we understand that she haad to work to gain and change her direction of life that she desires; “She walked bravely forward, led by an honest desire to find employment and delayed at every step by the interest of the unfolding scene, and a sense of helplessness amid so much evidence of power and force which she did not understand.” She tries to find a job: “She had never done this thing before, and lacked courage.” When Carrie found a job, and she loved her job, by the way she wrote to Charles, they were chating. After she lost her job, she was having a hard time. Charlie helped to Carrie even to buy clothes he gave Money. After Charlie’s help Carrie and he started to live together. Charlie is bourgeois. He pormised about marriage to Carrie but he never did it, he just keep it on his speech. After all this things, Charlie made a big event and he called his friend Goerge Hurstwood then he came and saw the Carrie. If we talk about the most important character Goerge Hustwood, “Hurstwood was an interesting character after his kind. He was shrewd and clever in many little things, and capable of creating a good impression.” he is Flashy too. He is financally in good. He could not took his eyes on the Carrie and they liked each other. “He kept a horse and neat trap, had his wife and two children, who were well established in a neat house on the North Side near Lincoln Park, and was altogether a very acceptable individual of our great American upper class—the first grade below the luxuriously rich.” He is high class also and important man. By the way, he is married, this marriage also is known by the Carrie, but even if he is married this relationship continued. They loved. We can understand the Naturalism features on this part for example; we can say that this is sexuality and adultry. We can observe the story; at the same time Charlie was with another woman, because of this sutiation, hustwood caught the chance. Hustwood trusted directly to Carrie, that’s why, he ignored his true wife and his family. Carrie left the Charlie, then married the Hustwood. For a long time, this marriage, was notice by hustwood first wife the Hustwood’s social standing was broken, Money he lost and also lost his job. These are the downfall things that he lived. And some choices made your end in Naturalism, as we look. But Carrie always thinks herself that we understand and keep completing her American Dream life and desire, “she thought to herself.” Carrie went up, Hustwood was down. We can understand the identy and choices of Naturalism. For Naturalism we understand that; “jungles, his innate instincts dulled by too near an approach to free-will, his free-will not sufficiently developed to replace his instincts and afford him perfect guidance.” As human beings or human we cannot use our freewill. It is guided and controlled by some sources. If you are rich enough and in to high class you can survive and go high reach top. Carrie did used the Hustwood to change her life and to complete american dream that she had and escape the Chicago life.
To make conculison, end of the story Carrie completed her fancy life and American Dream, but when she got everything, she was disspleased. Hustwood made her final by his choices and he was homless. Around this time, Charlie was woking in hotel. The final shows also drramatic transformation of Naturalism.
